In 1946-47, I studied in Mr. William Palmer's art class. From there I enrolled in Pratt Institute's Advertising and Design program in Brooklyn, NY.
Please tell me a little about Mr. Palmer.

Basically, the work is about a nurse from the turn of the century and what she does on her day off for self care.

Displaced

For the Substance and Light exhibition, artist Ipek Duben created an installation about the refugee experience entitled "Farewell My Homeland."

Utica is a New York State refugee center. Antnio Guterres, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, has acknowledged the towns status, as a once-crumbling industrial town that over the past three decades has generously welcomed more than 10,000 refugees from nearly 30 countries. Today, nearly one in six residents of the town of 65,000 is a refugee. In Utica, the Mohawk Valley Resource Center for Refugees assists families who have been displaced with language classes, employment services, and cultural activities; learn more at www.mvrcr.org.

Artists and writers have widely interpreted the refugee experience. See, for example, the work of the sculptor Luis Jimnez (1940-2006); John Steinbecks novel The Grapes of Wrath and the John Ford-directed film version starring Henry Fonda; or El Norte, the 1984 film of Guatemalan children migrating to the United States.

And please come to the Museum of Art Auditorium on Tuesday, November 7, at 3:45 p.m. for a panel discussion, Victims of War and Oppression: Charting the Refugee Experience.

My Home

One of the central themes of the exhibition Substance and Light: Ten Sculptors Use Cameras is a persons relationship to a place. The artists address memories of former homes, as well as real and symbolic travel to and from a home under different circumstances.

Describe some aspect of the apartment / house / dormitory / or other place you live.
What words do you associate with it (certain people, sounds, aromas, light, dark, for example)?
Describe your favorite room, or favorite object in your house, or favorite place in your yard.

In the Wayne Wang film Smoke, the smoke-shop owner photographed his Brooklyn store every day. When he showed his pictures to a friend, the other man thought they all looked the same until the owner encouraged him to examine each image carefully for small differences, and the friend discovered a picture that included his deceased wife. Consider documenting your home, or a room in it, on a regular basis (daily or weekly, for example).

Munson-Williams-Proctor invites your comments and responses to questions about its current exhibition, Substance and Light: Ten Sculptors Use Cameras. Substance and Light is organized to celebrate the 30th anniversay of Sculpture Space, Inc.

Sculpture Space, Inc., is an artists' studio program at 12 Gates Street in west Utica. Approximately 20 artists come to Utica annually from all over the world to create art work during a two-month residency.

Visitors are welcome to attend quarterly works-in-progress receptions to meet the artists and view their projects. Visit the Sculpture Space website, to learn more about the studio and its programs.
